Peter Britt is best known as a pioneer photographer, but he was a landscape and portrait painter as well. In his native Switzerland he made his living traveling from village to farm painting portraits for a commission. After immigrating to Highland, Illinois, in 1845, he continued to make a meager living as an itinerant artist, until competition from the newly invented photographic camera became too great. Within a few years, Britt embraced the new technology and trained as a photographer. Oil painting became more of a leisure activity for him.
